System dynamics · a stock-and-flow modelling exercise

Tracing a chain of effects.

A coursework model exploring a proposed chain of relationships between lost belongings, tracking-device demand, chip allocation and car prices.

CONTRIBUTION

Team modelling & systems research

CONTEXT

ISE 401 · systems design

METHODS

Stock-and-flow diagrams / Feedback relationships / Scenario modelling

Stock-and-flow diagram connecting assumptions about lost belongings, tracking devices and car prices
01 / THE QUESTION

What changes when we look at the relationships between variables, rather than each variable alone?

02 / THE OBSERVATION

A model needs to make its links and assumptions explicit before its outputs can be interpreted.

03 / THE APPROACH
  1. 01

Mapped the proposed relationships between loss of personal items, tracking-device demand, chip supply and car prices.

  2. 02

Organised the model into stocks, flows and connected variables.

  3. 03

Documented the assumptions and model structure in a team report.

04 / WHAT CAME OUT OF IT

A stock-and-flow diagram and systems design report exploring an academic scenario.

05 / A REFLECTION

The B12-related premise is a coursework assumption, not a demonstrated medical or economic causal relationship. The value of the exercise is in structuring and examining the model’s dependencies.
